The Internet, and doing good without involving the government

I don’t like the government. I don’t like most governments. Hell, I can’t think of ANY government I like. I’m one of those libertarians who is pretty close to being an Anarchist. However, I do believe in philanthropy. Not that I practice much of it…. but I digress.

Here is a way that an individual can make a difference, to an individual elsewhere. This is one of the best things going on the Internet – individuals, helping individuals.

www.kiva.org lets you make a microloan to an individual in another country. Its not a gift, its a loan, though there is a high default rate in some locales (It is a high risk loan). Kiva has tools that let you manage the risk.

Now THIS, is how things should work. Right now, I have a desire to spend on me (I’m buying a new Macbook soon), but around the new year, I think I’ll take one hundred dollars, and see how long I can recycle it through Kiva. That would be something worth blogging about, I think.
