True Grit, the book

So, I’m reading the Novel “True Grit” aloud to my wife. One of the incidental characters is described as a “pocket calculator” salesman. Which led Pamela Mae Lyon to ask, what a pocket calculator would be, back in that time frame. A quick google turns up the following thread
http://www.wordorigins.org/index.php/forums/viewthread/3455/. As an aside, Pam has seen neither of the “True Grit” movies, so this is a “cold” book to her.

    It’s a pretty good book. I read it before I saw the (John Wayne) movie. The other one is on my list.

    I still haven’t finished it….. we got busy, and just haven’t gone back to it. Its in one of the large piles of books to read.
