I'll check that out! I've played around with the Itunes lectures, but they are really hit and miss..... and mostly miss, I've found. They tend toward the raw "dump a lecture online" deal. The Modern Scholar series (I am now listening to History of the English Language) is more polished. I'm enjoying them a lot.

DIY scholar will be googled shortly!

I absolutely love this sort of thing and spend way too much money on Teaching Company courses.

You may be interested in a blog -- google "DIY scholar" (I know you know I'm not spam but am always careful about posting links) which has a ton of other resources.

I've also been able to download (free) quite a few lectures off of itunes university.

I haven't tried any of the Modern Scholar courses yet. My library doesn't carry them, sadly.

I'm glad you liked it. :) Look at Billy Collins or Ted Kooser for some very accessible modern poetry.

I really enjoyed this post. I love thinking about connections like these!

I've been trying to like poetry for a long time, but get too impatient to get to the end and I know I don't appreciate it. Maybe I need to take a page out of your book and read aloud to the parrots.

I'll let you know how it goes!

I just saw the movie, and read over your comments. The first thing that came to mind when I saw the egg (on the old wooden pedestal) and she said it could buy a whole nuclear power plant, was the Faberge` egg made by the House of Faberge` for the Czar's of Russia. After reading a bit more about the eggs, I found out that 50 were commissioned for the royal family, 42 are known in existance, 2 more were never completed, which leaves 6 eggs lost in the world, either destroyed during the Russian Revolution, or perhaps in very wealthy people's private collections, or perhaps in the hands of a very old vampire? It's interesting to think about, with the whole Transylvania thing (eastern europe) and vampires living for a very long time. In most of the movies I see vampires are aristocratic and very wealthy, or at least noble like in some sense. I'm trying to track down a picture and description of each egg created for the royal family, it would be very neat if one of the eggs actually was a puzzle egg like in the movie. just my thoughts 5 minutes after watching the film.

Details? My macaw is just a mini and I could make this statement about him. And no matter how much you supervise, he finds a way to destroy. Hope Harley didn't get anything too important or expensive to repair!

The caiques are huge bell ringers -- I can pretty much tune it out now, but it took a long time. Glad she's enjoying it, though!

And yes, macaws are quite possibly too smart for their own good (or our own good?) at times. Good for you for out-tricking him!

They make little bird noises - nothing like a song, but I enjoy the sound. The wing fluttering noise can be annoying, but not very.

I have them in quarantine, so the parrots don't know about them, and won't for a few weeks. I'm hoping the fluttering little guys serve as some entertainment for the big guys. I know someone who had to be really careful with her finches, because one of her African Greys hated them. It would kill them at first opportunity.

Yeah, I find it nerve wracking to work on their feet too. But they need it! Next time I'm working through the doors of the cage, and not even taking them out. I have a 38 inch long cage (about 16 inches on each of the other dimensions), with multiple doors.

For some reason, the link you posted above didn't work for me, but I google imaged and came across other pictures. They are gorgeous! Looking forward to seeing the ones you have.

What does they sound like? Hope it's pleasant sounding!

Are the parrots curious about them?

Good luck trimming their nails. I've helped do some before, and it's nerve-wracking because they are so small I worry about crushing them, but then they can escape my grasp!

I'm not sure where you're located, but the rescue where I volunteer frequently get finches in, and we adopt them out at a fraction of the price of what pet stores charge. You might be able to find some that way.

Personally, I love the beeping of plain old zebra finches, though certainly not musical by any means!
